John S. Kowats
John S. Kowats, 86, of Fairfield, beloved husband of Helen Domonkos Kowats, died on November 6 in his home. Born in Bridgeport, son of the late Janos and Kate Kovacs, he had been a lifelong Fairfield resident.
Survivors, in addition to his wife, include three children, Donald J. Kowats, Sr, and his wife, Carolyn, of Newtown, Nancy Alshuk of Derby, and John M. Kowats and his wife, Barbara, of Fairfield; a brother, Daniel Kowats of Ormond Beach, Fla.; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Mr Kowats attended McKinley School and graduated from Roger Ludlow High School. He was a retired superintendent at Tomlinson-Hawley and Patterson Contractors of Trumbull, and served as president of the Carpenters Local Union for 30 years. Mr Kowats was a member of the Fairfield Special Police for 20 years attaining the rank of sergeant. He was a lay minister and head of the Junior Church at the United Church of Christ in Bridgeport.
A funeral service was held November 10 in the Spear Funeral Home, 39 South Benson Road, Fairfield. Interment was in Lawncroft Cemetery.
