Esther F. Small
Esther F. Small
Esther F. Small of Pittsburgh, Penn., died unexpectedly November 4. She was the wife of the late Arthur Small, who died on May 7, 2003 (they had been married for 51 years), and the mother and mother-in-law of Stephen and Susan Small of Sandy Hook, and grandmother to Sharon and Edward Small, also of Sandy Hook.
Mrs Small was born on May 11, 1923, daughter of the late Leo and Sarah Freudenheim. She grew up in Watkins Glen, N.Y., where her father owned a successful clothing store. After graduating from high school as salutatorian, Esther went to Ohio State University. Upon graduation, she worked as a dietician in New York City and later in Buffalo, N.Y. After her marriage, she and Arthur moved to Pittsburgh in 1956, where they made their home.
She had an adventurous spirit and was one of the first Girl Scout leaders to take her troop whitewater rafting. She enjoyed traveling, the theater, bowling and tennis, was a superb cook, famous for her baking, and was always willing to help her friends and family in times of need. Above all, she enjoyed spending time with her family and will be greatly missed by those who cherished her.
She is also survived by her daughter, Elaine Small of Indiana, Penn.; and her brother, Harry Freudenheim, and his wife Renee, of Chicago, Ill., as well as several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by two brothers, Abraham and Norman.
Services were held in Pittsburgh on November 7.
