STAMFORD â According to the National Safe Kids Campaign in Washington, DC, accidental or traumatic injuries such as burns, playground injuries, and scooter and bicycle injuries, to name a few, are the leading cause of death and disability for children ages 14 and under.
To help parents and caregivers learn how to prevent such injuries and to provide a safe environment for their children, Danbury Hospital and Fairfield County SAFE KIDS will supply local libraries with two educational VHS tapes entitled Are We There Yet, which discusses child passenger safety, and Jello in a Jar, which addresses bicycle safety. Beginning in November, residents of New Fairfield, Bethel, Brookfield, Newtown, and Danbury may borrow these videotapes from their town libraries.
The National SAFE KIDS Campaignâs mission is to prevent the number one killer of children â unintentional injury. By working at a national level through grassroots coalitions like Fairfield County SAFE KIDS in Stamford, the organization educates adults and children, provides safety devices to families in need, and passes and strengthens laws to empower families and communities to protect children 14 and younger.
Since the National SAFE KIDS Campaignâs inception in 1987, the nationâs unintentional injury death rate for children ages 14 and under has declined 33 percent.
