Snapshot: Linda Dale Mulholland
Family: My husband Bob, to whom I have been married 54 years. We also have a son and two daughters and their families including two grandsons.
How did you and Bob meet? We were both systems engineers working for IBM.
Pets? We have always had dogs. Our current is a 2½-year-old Cavalier King Charles spaniel, and he thinks he’s six months old.
How long have you lived in Newtown? We built our house in 1985, and moved in January 1986, so it’s going on 39 years.
Career: I am retired. After I was a systems engineer with IBM, I was an eighth grade math teacher at Newtown Middle School for 20 years. That was my official retirement, and then I got very involved with Newtown Bridge Club. What began there as a part-time activity has turned a third career (laughs). I am the assistant club manager, I teach classes — which I love, because it combines teaching with the bridge — I direct games, and I play. I love to play bridge.
What is your proudest accomplishment? During the COVID pandemic, I taught many bridge players how to play online and it was, for many people, huge. It gave them a focus, something to do during the pandemic, something to look forward to. Several of them didn’t even own a computer, so for some it was a huge step just to get and begin using a computer. It was a wonderful outlet for so many people. Everybody found what worked for them during COVID, and it has continued to work for a lot of people.
Clearly my family would be my personal overall accomplishment. With teaching, it was that my love and enthusiasm for math allowed me to share that with children. One of the most rewarding things is to be an educator and have children enjoy what you’re teaching, and have a positive attitude about it.
What do you like to do with your free time? I’m a crafter. I used to do a lot of cross-stitching and knitting, even as a teenager. Now I do a lot of scrapbooking. I’ve made scrapbooks for the family, all the kids’ significant events. I have one for each year of our marriage. I love it. I also like to read. I belong to a book club.
Favorite author? Geraldine Brooks.
Favorite book? People of The Book.
If you could spend the day with one person, living or deceased, who would you choose and why? My mother. She died 30 years ago, at age 71, way too young. She should have had a baseline mammogram. She was the one who taught me how to play bridge at the kitchen table. My sister and I still play because of her.
Favorite color: Orange.
Favorite food: Strawberry-rhubarb pie.
What is your favorite thing about Newtown? When we built our house here, we chose Newtown because of the school system; the small town — my husband and I both grew up in small towns; the proximity to medical professionals and shopping, and so many wonderful things New England has to offer; and all the volunteer opportunities. My husband and I have both retired, and have stayed active by volunteering for different clubs and boards for years.
Do you have a favorite travel destination? We went to the Adirondacks every summer while the kids were growing up, and through college. It’s a beautiful place.
What would you like to see The Newtown Bee cover, or cover further? I love The Newtown Bee. When I was growing up there was a local paper, and this is such a continuation of that. All of the reporting that you do, the fact that you’re so willing to cover so many activities — the plays, the dances, the clubs — you do a wonderful job. You’ve got a huge balancing act, trying to balance everybody’s requests and everything that happens, as well as your need to report factual information. I’m not going to suggest anything more.
Do you have a personal credo? Be kind.
