After a 2-0 semifinal victory over the Mustangs of Immaculate High School on November 12, the Newtown High School boys’ soccer team has continued its undefeated streak and secured a spot in the South-West Conference North Division Tournament finals. The Nighthawks finished the regular season with 10 wins and two ties, and achieved this 11th win, their second over the Mustangs, at Blue & Gold Stadium.

The Newtown offense found the back of the net early on in the first half with a goal by senior striker Tyler DiMartino, assisted by senior captain Tanner Trede, at the 25-minute mark. Multiple free kicks and shots on goal by senior captain Ryan Ruddy as well junior midfielder Jake Gonski kept the momentum favoring the Nighthawks throughout the rest of the first half.

Less than two minutes into the second half, a free kick from Ruddy at the 30-yard line resulted in another goal from senior captain Jack Petersen.

Senior goalkeeper Connor Mandarano tallied seven saves during the shutout with help from defenders Sam Edwards and Clayton Kunzweiler.

“Our defense has been able to make our opponents frustrated by barely giving them any opportunities on our goal. Having such a strong defense throughout the whole season and into this postseason has allowed us to still win games even when we have struggled to put the ball in the back of the net,” Edwards said.

The Nighthawks will take on the New Milford Green Wave for the championship on Saturday November 14 at home, at 4 pm.
