Newtown Men Arrested In Monroe Robbery Case
MONROE — Monroe police have arrested two Newtown men on robbery charges, alleging that they robbed a gas station/convenience store there early on the morning of September 6.
Police said they have arrested Wesley Steinfeld, 29, of 16 Pine Tree Hill Road, and Christopher Basso, 25, of 21 Taunton Lake Drive in connection with the robbery at Monroe Buck Stop at 456 Main Street (Route 25).
After their arrests on warrants, each man was held on $250,000 bail for court arraignments.
Police said they charged Steinfeld on November 9 with first-degree robbery, third-degree larceny, and first-degree threatening. Steinfeld surrendered to police at the police station.
Steinfeld did not plead to the charges at his November 10 arraignment in Bridgeport Superior Court. He was being held on $250,000 bail on November 11 at the Bridgeport Correctional Center for a December 1 court appearance.
Police charged Basso on November 5 with accessory to first-degree robbery, accessory to third-degree larceny, conspiracy to commit first-degree robbery, and conspiracy to commit third-degree larceny. Police arrested Basso at his residence.
Basso did not plead to the charges at his arraignment on November 6 in Bridgeport Superior Court. He is scheduled to return to court on November 20. Basso was being held on November 11 on $250,000 bail at Bridgeport Correctional Center.
Monroe police said that at 12:33 am on September 6, they received a report that a robbery had occurred at the Buck Stop. The gas station is located near Main Street’s intersection with Hattertown Road.
Responding officers were met at the store by the night manager and the store owner who reported that approximately 20 minutes earlier, a male wearing dark pants, a black, hooded sweatshirt, and a mask covering his whole face, had entered the Buck Stop, police said.
The male placed a plastic bag on the counter, implied that he had a weapon and told the night manager to fill the bag with cash, police said.
The manager placed an undetermined amount of cash from the register into the plastic bag, police added.
The male then ran out of the store with the cash, moving in a southerly direction, police said. No vehicle was observed and the store’s night manager was unable observe the race, age, or hair color of the robber, according to police.
After a two-month investigation by Monroe police detectives, Steinfeld and Basso were identified as suspects, police said.
Police said they determined that Steinfeld committed the robbery and that Basso drove the getaway vehicle.
No other arrests are expected in the case, police said.
