Liturgical Love Songs And Lessons

Of Empowerment

SOUTHBURY — Beth El Synagogue has a pair of special services the weekend of November 13-–14.

Looking for a Jewish romantic experience? On Friday, November 13, Beth El Synagogue will hold a unique worship service featuring liturgical love songs in accordance with the ancient tradition. The early Kabbalists, the mystics of Safed, Israel, welcomed the Sabbath bride each Friday night with songs and poetry inspired by the biblical Song of Songs.

This musical service will honor the memory of George Steinfeld, a former resident of Southbury, native of Israel and co-founder of Nefesh Klezmer Band, a popular group that has played at many local celebrations and benefits, including AmeriCares HomeFront. Cantor Sharon Citrin and guest musicians Alex Greenberg and Britt Goodman, also members of Nefesh, will lead the musical prayers.

The service begins at 7:30 pm and will be followed by a chocolate and dessert reception.

On Saturday morning, November 14, the weekly Torah portion from the Book of Genesis will provide the backdrop for a thematic exploration of “The Matriarchs and Lessons of Empowerment.” A participatory service especially, but not exclusively, for women will explore personal, spiritual, and emotional capacity through the lives of the biblical matriarchs.

Rabbi Eliana Falk explains: “Our foremothers are, arguably, the forces through which our people were established — not only by their bearing the children who gave rise to the Israelite people, but through their insight, strength, and character that saw them through countless personal and familial adversities. The lessons they teach us are just as relevant now as they were 3,500 years ago. We hope that all women, girls, and men will enjoy this very special service and be inspired by these great women.”

Beth El offers a welcoming and supportive Conservative Jewish faith community for traditional and nontraditional families and individuals. All events will take place at the Walzer Family Jewish Community Campus at 444 Main Street North.
