While the Newtown High School varsity football team ran roughshod over Bullard Havens last Friday, the jayvee Nighthawks had a little trouble overcoming the Tigers and dropped a tough, 15-0 decision on Monday.

Bullard Havens scored once in the first quarter on a 40-yard touchdown run and then once more in the third quarter after recovering a Newtown fumble in the end zone.

For Newtown, Jake Elias, RC Coyle and Sean Walsh played well on defense throughout the game (Walsh recovered a fumble in the second quarter). Mark Boland, Kyle Hastedt and Sean Reilly also sparked the D, with Boland knocking away one pass and Hastedt and Reilly intercepting two others.

The offense had a little spark in the fourth quarter as Kevin Whipkey completed a 20-yard pass to Tim Byrne and Ben Bagaglio caught a 12-yard pass and brought the ball to the six – where the drive stalled.

The freshman football team, on the other hand, upended Bullard Havens, 22-6. Tony Perretta, Keith Gotthardt and Shane Huebner all scored touchdowns and John Collins made a tackle in the end zone for a safety.

Newtown started off strong with a 40-yard run by Brendan O’Connor. Perretta was soon in the end zone with the touchdown. Collins followed with a safety to put Newtown ahead, 8-0, and then Gotthardt scored (after nice runs from Jeff Levasseur and Matt Selezan) to put the Nighthawks ahead, 15-0.

Collins halted another Bullard Havens offensive series with an interception.

In the fourth quarter, Perretta and Selezan helped carry the ball up the field before Huebner ran it in from five yards out to put the ‘Hawks ahead, 22-0. Bullard Havens answered back with a touchdown of its own.

In the final moments of the game, Chaz Perry had a key interception to halt another Bullard Havens drive.
