On Tuesday, November 16, a Little Free Library will be installed at Treadwell Memorial Park.

The effort is a collaboration between Newtown Parks and Recreation, Newtown Rotary Club, and Newtown Allies For Change (NAFC).

The grand opening for the local book exchange program is planned for noon Tuesday. The library will be installed near the pool entrance, 53 Philo Curtis Road.

NAFC has been in conversations with C.H. Booth Library and Friends of the Library as well as the Newtown Rotary Club to create a well-supported community effort so that there is a steady supply of books for the Little Free Library.

The members of NAFC are reportedly very excited to participate in this community project and have already been donating books towards the effort.

The Little Free Library is a book exchange program with over 100,000 locations across the country. The Treadwell Park location will be accessible, protected, and stocked with books on a regular basis, with plans for snow removal as appropriate.

Newtown Parks & Recreation strives to provide safe places for people of all ages and walks of life — places where they can engage in health, wellness, creative opportunities, and personal growth. Treadwell has benches near the pools and the playgrounds where families could read together, books can be exchanged, and the community enriched. The partnership will directly support the work and mission of both Newtown Allies for Change and Newtown Parks & Rec.

The Newtown Rotary is also honored to be a part of this project, along with Parks and Recreation and Newtown Allies for Change, said current club president Alex Villamil.

“We believe that The Little Library will serve Treadwell Park patrons, families, as well as the community by providing them the gift of knowledge and wonder that books can bring,” Villamil said.
