84 Temporarily Closed In Both Directions; Long Delays On And Off The Highway Reported
I-84 was temporarily closed in both directions in Newtown Friday morning due to two separate incidents near the Hanover Road overpass.
As of noon, secondary roads in Newtown are seeing backups in both directions, as travelers try to circumvent the highway.
The traffic issues began around 10:30 am, when a two-vehicle crash on I-84 East near the Hanover Road overpass was reported. Hawleyville Volunteer Fire Company #1, Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps, a paramedic, and Connecticut State Police troopers all responded to the scene.
At least one person was transported by Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corp to a hospital from that crash, which quickly created miles of backup on the eastbound side of the highway. At noon, nearly four miles of backup traffic was reported, extending back to Exit 7.
Westbound Incident
While first responders were working the crash on the eastbound side of the highway, a tractor trailer jack-knifed on I-84 West in the same area.
Newtown Hook & Ladder was initially dispatched to the second scene, but first responders at the eastbound scene were able to quickly ascertain that there were no injuries, and no fluids leaking from that truck. Hook & Ladder was able to return to service before committing to the highway, which was already slowing due to rubbernecking.
The jack-knifed truck closed the highway, however, which began a second round of backups. By noon, that side of the highway was at a standstill for just about four miles, nearly back to the Rochambeau Bridge.
A wrecker crew was able to move the truck enough that one lane of I-84 West was reopened around 11:50 Friday morning.
Meanwhile, rainy conditions began sending firefighters, police officers, and Town crews to multiple locations where trees and/or wires were falling. Botsford, Dodgingtown and Sandy Hook had all been dispatched to related calls by noon.
