Soccer Teams Advance To Championships
Newtown High School's girls' and boys' soccer teams both advanced to the South-West Conference North Division championship games with semifinal-round victories on November 12.
The girls came from behind and defeated host Pomperaug of Southbury in penalty kicks, Regulation ended in a 1-1 tie and the Nighthawks outscored the Panthers 4-1 in PKs after scoreless play in double overtime. Julianna Stavola had one save in PKs.
Riley Powers, who also scored in regulation, Katie Rowan, Ally McCarthy, and Emma Magazu scored in the round of penalty kicks. Magazu has been sidelined by injury for most of the season, was called upon for chance to seal the win, and made it count.
