Horse Guard Swords Stolen

Sometime between October 30 and November 7, someone entered a storage building at the grounds for the Second Company Governor’s Horse Guard at 4 Wildlife Drive, Fairfield Hills, and stole two decorative sabers, police said.

The blade of each saber has an engraving stating “Second Company Governor’s Horse Guard.”

Officer Maryhelen McCarthy is investigating the theft and asks anyone with information on the incident to contact her at the police station at 203-426-5841 regarding Case #27916.

Intersection Crash

Police report a two-vehicle collision at the intersection of South Main Street and Country Club Road about 7 pm on November 4.

Police report that motorist Patricia Lewis, 42, of 9 Bears Hill Road was driving a vehicle southward on South Main Street, as motorist Robert Nowlan, 70, of West Haven was driving a vehicle northward on South Main Street and attempting to turn left to enter Country Club Road.

Some southbound traffic had yielded to allow Nowlan to make the turn, but as he attempted to turn left, Nowlan’s vehicle collided with Lewis’s vehicle, according to police. A passenger in Lewis’s vehicle was transported by the Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps to Bridgeport Hospital to be treated for injuries, police said. Nowlan received an infraction for failure to grant the right of way, according to police.

Mt Pleasant Road Accident

A two-vehicle accident occurred on Mt Pleasant Road at its intersection with Taunton Lake Road about 1 pm on November 1, according to police.

The accident involved motorist Rochelle Campanelli, 54, of 3 Church Hill Road, and motorist Brian Ballerini, 39, of Southbury, police said. Emergency medical staff went to the scene, but made no transport, police said. Campanelli received a written warning, police said.

 

DUI Incident

Police said they received a call reporting an accident on High Rock Road in Sandy Hook about 8 pm on November 4, so they responded to investigate.

Police said they found that a Toyota Highlander SUV driven by Idilio Santos, 49, of Monroe had struck a tree and some rocks, coming to rest in the middle of the road. There were no injuries.

Police said they charged Santos with driving under the influence and with failure to drive to the right. Santos was released on $500 bail for a November 18 arraignment on the charges in Danbury Superior Court.

Threatening

Police report that they received a call from AT&T informing them that a threatening telephone call concerning an AT&T store had been made to one of their call centers.

Police said they then investigated the incident because the telephone call had originated in Newtown.

Police said that on November 5, they charged William Robertson, 38, of 62 Hanover Road with threatening. Police released Robertson on a written promise to appear in court on November 19.

DUI Arrest

Police said that at about 2:25 am on November 7, they received a report stating that a motorist who was driving erratically was exiting Interstate 84 at Exit 11.

Police said they located the vehicle in question traveling eastward on Berkshire Road, after which it turned onto Fir Tree Lane and then entered a driveway.

After investigating, police charged Lindsay Duncan, 21, of Ansonia with driving under the influence and with failure to drive to the right.  After she posted $100 bail, Duncan was released for a November 20 court appearance.

VW vs Chrysler

About 7:23 am on November 4, motorist Victoria Kroha, 17, of 5 Birch Rise Drive, was driving a 2002 Volkswagen Cabriolet eastward on Berkshire Road, near Newtown High School, behind eastbound motorist Aimee Talbot, 17, of 92 Toddy Hill Road, who was driving a 2002 Chrysler Sebring sedan, police report.

During congested traffic conditions, the Volkswagen struck the rear end of the Chrysler, police said.

There were no injuries. Police said they verbally warned Kroha for failure to drive a reasonable distance apart.

Sandy Hook Collision

Police report that motorist Joseph Scotto, 56, of Ansonia was driving a 2005 Ford Explorer SUV on Berkshire Road, near its intersection with Tanglewood Lane, at about 5:50 am on October 30, when the vehicle collided with a deer.

Scotto was not injured. Police took no enforcement.

Warrant

State police report they served a warrant on November 6 against Matthew Komar, 33, of Stratford, who was involved in an incident on eastbound Interstate 84 in Newtown on the night of August 7.

State police charged Komar with failure to drive a reasonable distance apart, driving under suspension, and interfering with police.

State police released Komar on $750 bail for a November 17 court appearance.

I-84 Crash

Abner Cardona, 30, of Danbury was driving a 2005 Dodge Ram pickup truck eastward on Interstate 84, about one mile west of Exit 10, about 6:50 am on November 5, when he lost control of the vehicle and struck some guardcabling, damaging about 150 feet of the guardcabling, state police said.

There were no injuries. State police said that charges against Cardona included failure to maintain the proper lane, driving an unregistered vehicle, and failure to have automotive insurance.

Stop-and-Go

At about 8 am on November 4, motorist Tonya Chever, 45, of Naugatuck, who was driving a 2015 Nissan Altima in heavy stop-and-go traffic on westbound Interstate 84, near Exit 10, was slowing and was then struck from behind by trucker Christopher Dura, 31, of Hazelton, Penn., who was driving a 2001 Kenworth tractor-trailer truck, state police said.

There were no injuries. Dura received an infraction for following too closely, state police said.

DUI Charge

Police said that at about 1:15 pm on November 9, they spotted a vehicle pulled over onto the side of the road along Wasserman Way, near its intersection with Nunnawauk Road, so they stopped to check on the situation.

Police said that motorist Chaun Norton, 47, of Monroe was asleep in the front seat of the vehicle, raising concerns about his health/welfare.

An investigation resulted in police charging Norton with driving under the influence. After processing, Norton was released on $500 bail for a November 24 appearance ion Danbury Superior Court, police said.

Warrant

Police report that Sean Gill, 23, of Torrington went to the police station on the morning of November 9 to turn himself over to police after learning that a warrant had been issued for his arrest.

Police charged Gill with second-degree failure to appear in court. The charge stems from an incident in Monroe in which Gill allegedly was driving with a suspended license, police said.

After posting $500 bail, police released Gill for a November 24 court appearance.

DUI Incident

Police said that at about 4:47 pm on November 9 near 31 Berkshire Road, they pulled over motorist Kristina Bain, 28, of Naugatuck to investigate due to erratic driving.

Police said they charged Bain with driving under the influence and then took her into custody. While being held by police, Bain became unruly and was additionally charged with interfering with police, third-degree criminal mischief, and with four counts of assault, according to officials.

Police held Bain on bail for arraignment on November 10 in Danbury Superior Court. Bain pleaded not guilty to all seven charges and was released from court on a written promise to appear on November 25.

UPDATED November 18, 2015A motorcyclist was involved in a two-vehicle accident that occurred about 12:10 pm on November 7 on Hawleyville Road at the Exit 9 interchange of Interstate 84. Police said motorist Joseph Platano, 69, of Long Boat Key, Fla., was driving a 2015 Hyundai Genesis sedan southward on Hawleyville Road, as motorcyclist Jared Modzelewski, 25, of 8 Patricia Lane was riding a 2012 Ducati Monster northward on Hawleyville Road. The Hyundai then attempted to make a left turn onto the on-ramp for eastbound I-84, resulting in the Ducati striking the sedan’s right rear fender and door. Hawleyville volunteer firefighters, the Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps, and Danbury Ambulance responded to the accident. Modzelewski was transported to Danbury Hospital, police said. He was treated and released, a hospital spokeswoman said. Platano received an infraction for making a restricted turn, police said.The original version of this photo caption included incorrect information about Mr Modzelewski, who was wearing a safety helmet at the time of the accident.  Incorrect information had originally been provided to The Bee concerning that point.  
A Frontier Communications crew starts work to install a new utility pole on South Main Street, just north of its intersection with Cold Spring Road, on Wednesday morning, A heavy dump truck had hit and snapped a utility pole, requiring its replacement. A half-mile section of South Main Street was closed to through-traffic for eight hours while repair work was underway.
