NHS State Tourney Update
Newtown High Schoolâs field hockey, soccer, and volleyball teams all began state tournament play this past week.
The NHS field hockey team won its Class L State Tournament qualifying round game with a 2-0 triumph over Newington on Tuesday. With the win, the Nighthawks earned the No. 16 seed and a first-round game with top-seeded and unbeaten Glastonbury on Wednesday, November 10 (after The Bee sports section went to press).
Newtown Highâs girlsâ soccer team qualified for the Class LL tourney and, as the No. 15 seed, hosted No. 18 Hall of West Hartford on Tuesday. The Nighthawks saw their season come to an end in a 1-0 defeat. Newtown went 7-3-5 during the regular season. Newtownâs boysâ soccer team also lost its first-round game in a 1-0 nail-biter, losing in overtime to Ridgefield, on Monday (see related story).
Coming off their South-West Conference championship (see related story), the NHS girlsâ volleyball team, seeded eighth, earned a first-round bye in the Class LL tourney and was scheduled to play No. 9 Cheshire on November 11 in the second round. Newtown, with a victory, would play the winner of No. 1 Southington and No. 17 Stamford in the quarterfinals on Saturday, November 13.
