The St. Rose School varsity boys’ basketball team opened the 2000-01 season with a 39-32 win over St. Mary’s.

St Rose led the whole game, but St Mary’s cut the score to 33-31 at the start of the fourth quarter. But St Rose outscored its opponents 12-2 over about the final six minutes. The game was iced in the last 30 seconds with a pair free throws by Brendan Kelly.

Will Culligan was the high scorer with 12 points. Oliver Paynter, Gregory Kraushaar and Chris Plavnicky had 6 points each.

“Overall, a really great team effort and team win to start the season,” said head coach Bill Peterson.

The St. Rose jayvees, however, were beaten by St. Mary’s, 33-21. Kevin Troy was the leading scorer for the locals with 10 points.
