Make Queen Street A Safer Place

To The Editor:

“Child Killed on Queen Street.”

This is the headline we will inevitably see if measures are not taken to slow and control traffic adjacent to the middle school.

I am a resident who walks by the middle school at least three times per week, usually around 9 am when children arrive for school. Today, for the second time in about a month, I witnessed the following:

The Crossing Guard raised his hand to stop traffic. He motions for a child to cross over from the west side of Queen Street to the east (the side of the school). A car, today it was a mini-school bus, completely ignores the crossing guard and goes right through the intersection. Had the child not paid attention herself and stepped into the street, she would have been hit and possibly killed.

This situation can not continue. More restrictive traffic measures must be taken immediately.

In this day of uncertainty, I think most of us realize there are many things in life that we cannot control – but this traffic problem is not one of them. We have the power to make this a safer place. Let’s do it.

Sincerely,

Lisa Floros
