‘Child’s Christmas’ In Newtown

In 1945, Dylan Thomas wrote a radio script called Memories of Christmas for BBC Wales Children’s Hour. Two years later he wrote a similar piece, Conversations About Christmas, for publication in Picture Post. An amalgamation of the two pieces was subsequently published in Harper’s Bazaar in December 1950 under the title A Child’s Memories of Christmas in Wales, and it is this version which has become an unforgettable classic Christmas story.

No one who has heard Thomas’ own recording of the story could fail to acknowledge his extraordinary gift for language. Once met, who could resist the uncles “breathing like dolphins,” or Auntie Hannah, who liked to tipple, or Miss Prothero, who “said the right thing, always”?

The Town Players of Newtown have extended their performance season this year to include a dramatized version of Dylan Thomas’ special Christmas story. Performances will be offered at The Little Theatre, on Orchard Hill Road in Newtown, Friday through Sunday, December 17-19.

Curtain is 8 pm each night. The production is suitable for all ages, with families encouraged to attend as a whole. For ticket information or reservations, contact the theatre’s box office at 270-9144.
