An accident shortly after 8 am this morning has led to the closure of an approximate 800-yard section of South Main Street (Route 25).

A Botsford firefighter encountered the incident, which was described as a truck vs pole accident in the area of Cold Spring Road. Roadways were wet this morning with intermittent rain. The driver of the industrial sized dump truck that struck a pole was reportedly uninjured. The pole that was struck was on the east side of South Main Street, approximately 75 yards south of the roadway’s intersection with Cold Spring Road.

The pole was hit cleanly, and broke off at its base. The section of pole holding a transformer and connected to utility wires was left standing, at a slight tilt, after the collision.

Botsford Fire Rescue and Newtown Police were dispatched to the scene. Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps was not dispatched.

Eversource was on the scene shortly after 10 am, with additional utilities also arriving to assess the damage.

Detours have been put into place, with northbound traffic now being sent over Meadowbrook Road out to Huntingtown Road, or onto Botsford Hill, where they can then pick up Little Brook, and then Button Shop, in order to return to South Main Street. Drivers are able to access Plaza South, at 266 South Main Street.

Southbound traffic is being diverted at Button Shop Road.

Police expect it will be a few hours before the roadway is open to through-traffic. Because the roadway has three travel lanes in the area of the accident — two southbound and one northbound, near the entrance to Plaza South — police expect the utility employees who are working to replace the pole on the east side of South Main Street will be able to continue their work if both southbound lanes are opened.

Northbound traffic will use the eastern southbound lane for travel through that area; southbound traffic will use the western lane only.

The accident occurred just south of Button Shop Road, as indicated on this map. Detours are set up to take vehicles over Button Shop Road, Meadow Brook Road and Botsford Hill Road until South Main can be reopened for through-traffic.
A Frontier truck passes through the detour post on South Main Street Wednesday morning, arriving with a replacement utility pole. Botsford Engine 551 blocked access to South Main Street at its intersection with Button Shop Road after an accident south of that intersection around 8 am. Drivers had access to the businesses in Plaza South, on the west side of the roadway, but had to divert over Button Shop, and then follow a detour before they could return to South Main and southbound travel.
