The win over Pomperaug may have gone a long way to securing the Newtown High School football team a berth in the CIAC Class LL playoffs next month.

With two games left on the schedule, the 7-1-0 Nighthawks are sitting in third place in the LL standings with an average of 122.50 points … just slightly ahead of 7-1-0 Fairfield Prep with an average of 120.00 points.

Southington and Greenwich sit atop the LL standings, both undefeated at 8-0-0. Both have difficult games to close out the regular season, but should remain in those top spots when all is said and done. Newtown finishes up with Weston and Masuk and while an expected win over winless Weston will garner little extra points for the ‘Hawks, a win over Masuk would guarantee a spot in the playoffs.

But the ‘Hawks could still earn that spot even with a loss to the Panthers.

Prep closes out its schedule against Amity (a LL team with four wins) and a strong West Haven team (undefeated at 8-0-0, ranked second in L) while No. 5 New Britain closes out its schedule with Weaver (an M team with four wins) and Southington.

Assuming Prep and New Britain both lose their finales, the only teams that could potentially move up are 6-2-0 Shelton or 7-1-0 Naugatuck. Both are a long shot, especially Naugatuck which closes out with 6-2-0 (the fourth-ranked team in SS) and 8-0-0 Ansonia (the fourth-ranked team in S).

The ‘Hawks are sitting in a very good position.
