Enforcement Campaign

Town police plan to intensify their enforcement of motorist safety belt use and child safety seat use during an enforcement campaign slated to run from November 13 through November 26, according to Sergeant Douglas Wisentaner.

The project is known as “Click It or Ticket,” and has been conducted annually by local police and other law enforcement agencies.

Police remind motorists that there are three basic rules of the road when it comes to travel safety.

They are: Always buckle up seat belts and child safety seats. Obey posted speed limits. Never drink alcohol and drive.

Besides safety belt and child safety seat enforcement, police will heighten their enforcement of speed laws and drunken driving laws during the coming holiday season.

“Obviously, no one wants to face the holidays with the loss of a loved one,” said Sgt Wisentaner.

“We are anticipating that increased awareness and enforcement will assist us in having a fatality-free holiday season,” he said.

Courteous driving behavior and being well-rested also foster highway safety, he said.

A past survey indicates that more than 85 percent of those traveling on local roads use safety belts, he said.

The enforcement project will include spot checks and heavy patrol work.

On Saturday, November 11, from 10 am to 1 pm, Newtown police will assist at a child safety seat clinic scheduled to be held at Wal-Mart, 164 Danbury Road, New Milford.

Newtown police will conduct a sobriety checkpoint at an unspecified location in Newtown on November 25.
