Newtown Author To Offer Program

REDDING — How would you stay warm if you lived in Colonial times? Where would you get your clothing? Could you survive without electricity… and television?

Children will learn about these and other aspects of life in early America with children’s picture book author and illustrator Jennifer Thermes when she presents “The Story, and History, Behind the Books” at Mark Twain Library on Sunday, November 12..

From 2 to 3 pm, Ms Thermes will read her books, When I Was Built and Sam Bennett’s New Shoes, and talk with the children about the history behind her stories. She will bring pictures and objects that inspire her work for show and tell, and through an interactive discussion the children will learn about what their lives would have been like had they lived in the olden days.

Children should bring their imaginations – curiosity and questions will be encouraged.

Jennifer Thermes is the author and illustrator of When I Was Built (Henry Holt, 2001) and Sam Bennett’s New Shoes (Carolrhoda Books, 2006), two picture books that were inspired by her deep love of history.

Ms Thermes lives in Newtown with her family, where she writes and also works as an illustrator for magazines, educational publishers, and various other clients. She lives in a very old house that was built around the year 1720 – the perfect place to pursue her projects.
