Mike Troy, a 2003 graduate of Newtown High School, scored the lone goal as the Fairfield University menâs soccer team defeated St. Peterâs, 1-0, last weekend to capture the MAAC Tournament championship.
With the win, the Stags improved to 14-5-1 and received an automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament. On Saturday, Troy and the Stags will be in Storrs to take on the University of Connecticut, which received at an-large bid with a 10-6-2 record.

In the win over St. Peterâs, Prep â which just missed on several scoring opportunities despite being out-shot 12-8 on the day - finally broke through off a free kick. Alex Cunliffe controlled the ball inside the box, drew a double-team about 25 yards from the near post, and then sent a crisp pass to the feet of Troy, who took a shot from 10 yards out which bounced off the Saint Peterâs goalkeeper and into the corner of the net.
It was the fourth goal of the season for Troy and 12th of his Fairfield career.
And Troy was not the only former Newtown High School star to enjoy â or suffer â some thrilling moments in conference tournaments this past weekend.
Marcus Tracy, a 2005 NHS graduate, was unable to help as Wake Forest â ACC regular-season co-champions â dropped a 1-0 decision to Duke in the ACC Tournament championship. The 15-3-3 Demon Deacons received a bye and will take on the winner of the Providence/Hofstra game in Hempstead, New York.
Brian Miles, a 2005 NHS graduate, started and helped lead the 19-1-0 Montclair State Red Hawks to a 2-1 double-overtime in over New Jersey City University in the NJAC Tournament championship last week. Miles has four assists for the Hawks.
Matt Pachniuk made some critical saves and helped lead Wheaton College to its second consecutive NEWMAC championship with a 1-0 win over Babson last weekend. The senior goalkeeper â the winningest keeper in Wheaton history â made a sliding save with two seconds left in the first half to keep Babson scoreless and finished with four saves on the day. The Lyons will open the NCAA Division III tournament on Saturday, at Amherst, against Western New England College and should they win will face on Sunday the winner of the Amherst/Westfield State game.
