High School Arrest

Police report that midday on November 2, they arrested a 17-year-old boy at Newtown High School, charging him with third-degree assault in connection with an incident there involving a boy under age 16.

State law conceals the identities of those under age 18 who are charged with crimes.

Police said the arrested boy was released from custody on a written promise to appear November 17 in Danbury Youthful Offender Court.

Wasserman Way MVA

Police report a two-car motor vehicle accident on Wasserman Way at its intersection with the ramps for Exit 11 of Interstate 84 at about 7:40 am November 1.

Westbound motorist David Coletti, 40, of Madison, who was driving a 2002 Mercedes-Benz 5500 sedan, was waiting on Wasserman Way for a red traffic signal, when he was struck from behind by westbound motorist Ashlee Manuel, 23, of Bethel, who was driving a 2004 Saab 9-3, according to police.

There were no injuries. Police issued Manuel an infraction for failure to drive a reasonable distance apart.

Main Street Collision

Police report a two-car collision about 2:50 pm October 28 near 45 Main Street.

The collision involved motorist Marion Edgar, 80, of Southbury, who was driving a 2002 Ford Taurus, and motorist Steven Helfand, 37, of Newtown, who was driving a 2004 Volkswagen Jetta, police said. There were no injuries. Police verbally warned Edgar for improper passing.

Three Charges

Police said that late on the morning of November 3, they went to 4 Clearview Drive in response to a report of a parking violation.

Police said they encountered David Kaza, 24, of that address and realized that they held three outstanding warrants for his arrest, so they took Kaza into custody. Police charged Kaza with three counts of violation of probation in connection with a past incident.

Police held Kaza on $15,000 bail for a November 6 appearance in Danbury Superior Court.

Paintball Vandalism

Police report three cases of paintball vandalism, which may be related. The incidents occurred sometime between 8 pm October 30 and 4 pm October 31.

The vandalism occurred at two residences on Pole Bridge Road and at Sand Hill Plaza on South Main Street. Police ask anyone with information on the property damage to contact them at 426-5841.

South Main Crash

A collision involving a pickup truck and a sedan occurred at an intersection of South Main Street and Peck’s Lane about 11 am October 31, police report.

After stopping at a stop sign at the end of Peck’s Lane, motorist Lionel Savoie, 77, of 14 Hitfield Road, who was driving a 1999 Dodge Ram pickup truck, made a right turn onto northbound South Main Street, police said.

In making that turn, the Dodge drove into the path of northbound motorist Mildred Hawks, 77, of 5 Jeremiah Road, who was driving a 2004 Chevrolet Malibu sedan, police said.

The two vehicles collided, but there were no injuries. Police issued Savoie a written warning for failure to grant the right of way.

Chevrolet/Toyota

Collision

About 12:40 pm October 29, motorist Marilyn Matschke, 49, of 39 Bear Hills Road, who was driving a 2002 Chevrolet S-10 pickup truck, attempted to turn left from a commercial driveway at 151 South Main Street onto southbound South Main Street, police said.

At that time, motorist Lawrence Denes, 52, of New Milford was driving a 2000 Toyota Corolla sedan northward on South Main Street.

The Chevrolet and the Toyota collided. There were no injuries. Police issued Matschke an infraction for failure to grant the right of way.

Jeep Vs Deer

About 1:30 am November 4, motorist Frederick MacVittie, 60, of Taunton Lake Road was driving a 1999 Jeep sport-utility vehicle southward on Saw Mill Road, when he encountered a deer, police said. The Jeep and the deer collided. MacVittie was not injured.

Pickup Hits Van

About 4:20 pm October 27, motorist Kris King, 16, of 101 Huntingtown Road, who was driving a 2002 Dodge Dakota pickup truck westward on Huntingtown Road, lost control of the truck and entered the eastbound lane, struck a storm drain cover, and then drove into the driveway at 75 Huntingtown Road, where the truck collided with a parked, unoccupied 1999 Chevrolet Express van, police said.

King was not injured. Police issued him a written warning for failure to drive to the right.

Honda Hits Saturn

 Police report that motorist Amy Schumann, 36, of New Milford, who was driving a 2002 Saturn sedan southward near 48 South Main Street about 5:30 pm October 22, slowed for traffic conditions, after which the Saturn was hit from behind by motorist Marie Cordeiro, 50, of Stamford, who was driving a 2004 Honda sport utility vehicle.

There were no injuries. Cordeiro received a written warning for following too closely.

Jeremiah Road

About 8:15 pm November 1, motorist Christie Daniels, 20, of 45 Bennetts Bridge Road, who was driving a 2006 Suzuki Aerio sedan eastward on Jeremiah Road, near Fawnwood Road, encountered a deer, police report.

The Suzuki and the deer collided, after which the deer left the area. Daniels was not injured. Police took no enforcement.

Youthful Offender

Police received a complaint about 11:30 am October 31, informing them that a motorist was driving erratically on Bryan Lane in Botsford and damaging lawns there.

The erratic driver damaged two lawns and then left the scene before police arrived to investigate. Police later found the driver, who is listed as a youthful offender, meaning that he or she is either 16 or 17 years old and thus his/her identity is shielded from disclosure by state law.

Police arrested the youth on charges of third-degree criminal mischief and making a restricted turn. After arrest processing, police released the youth for an upcoming appearance in Danbury Youthful Offender Court.

Bad Check

On November 7, Milford police informed Newtown police that they had in custody a man whom Newtown police wanted for arrest on a warrant stemming from a 2004 incident.

Newtown police arrested Clement Bellegarde, 42, of Milford on a charge of issuing a bad check for allegedly using a bad check to buy $2,700 of sheetrock in Newtown.

Newtown police released Bellegarde on $3,000 bail for a November 28 appearance in Danbury Superior Court.

Ford Vs Deer

Motorist Brian Chesley, 35, of Ansonia was driving a 1997 Ford pickup truck southward near 99 South Main Street about 4 pm October 31, when a deer entered the road and collided with the truck, police report. The deer then left the area. Chesley was not injured. Police took no enforcement.

Swamp Road Crash

About 4:30 pm October 31, motorist Lan Currier, 25, of Alpine Drive, who was driving a 1994 Jeep sport-utility vehicle northward on Swamp Road, turned to the right for an unknown reason and struck a tree along the right road shoulder, near 42 Swamp Road, according to police.

There were no injuries. Police issued Currier an infraction for making a restricted turn.

Ford Vs Mazda

About 10:17 am November 4, motorist Mary Licinsky, 55, of 58 Eden Hill Road, who was driving a 2006 Ford Fusion sedan eastward on Glover Avenue, failed to come to a full stop at a stop sign at that street’s intersection with Queen Street, police said.

At that time, motorist Michael Oemcke, 26, of Beacon Falls, was driving a 2005 Mazda 3 sedan southward on Queen Street, police said. The Ford and the Mazda collided.

 There were no injuries. Licinsky received a verbal warning from police for failure to stop at a stop sign.

Great Ring Accident

Motorist Herman Vogel, 61, of 11 Lyrical Lane, who was driving a 2006 Chrysler PT Cruiser northward on Great Ring Road, near its intersection with Sand Hill Road, about 12:15 am October 20, failed to negotiate a curve in the road and smashed into some metal guardrailing, police said. Vogel was not injured, according to police. The accident is under investigation, police said.

Off The Road

Motorist Joshua O’dell, 18, of South Main Street was driving a 1999 Dodge pickup truck northward on a wet South Main Street about 1 pm October 28, when he braked for another vehicle, but went into a skid and went off the right side of the road, smashing into an unoccupied Chevrolet sport-utility vehicle that was parked in a commercial parking lot, police report.

O’dell was not injured. Police issued him an infraction for making a restricted turn.

Toyota Accident

Motorist Naomi Hall, 45, of Bridgeport, who was driving a 2002 Toyota sedan southward on a wet South Main Street on October 28, attempted to negotiate a curve in the road, but lost control and climbed an embankment, struck a mailbox, and then reentered the roadway, police said. The impact triggered the vehicle’s airbags to open. Hall was not injured. Police verbally warned her for traveling too fast for conditions.

Three Vehicles

Police report a three-vehicle accident involving a box truck, a sedan, and a pickup truck about 4 pm October 25 near 99 South Main Street.

Motorist Anne Cody, 73, of Southbury, who was driving a 2002 Buick Century sedan southward on South Main Street, stopped to make a left turn into a driveway, police said. Southbound trucker Jonathan Lyons, 28, of Shelton, who was driving a 2007 International box truck, then struck the rear end of the Buick, police said.

That impact pushed the Buick into the northbound lane, where the Buick collided with a northbound 2003 Toyota Tundra pickup truck driven by James Dawson, 56, of Southbury, police said.

Newtown ambulance volunteers treated Cody at the scene, police said. Newtown Hook & Ladder firefighters went to the accident. Lyons received an infraction for failure to drive a reasonable distance apart.

Mirror-To-Mirror

Police report a two-truck accident secondary to another accident at about 4:15 pm October 28 on South Main Street.

Motorist Macedo Ildebrando, 44, of Brookfield was driving a 2001 Ford pickup truck northward and was approaching the scene of a previous accident, police said.

At that time, motorist Peter Mould, 61, of Milford was driving a 2000 Dodge pickup truck southward and approaching the same accident scene, police said.

The Ford traveled over the road’s centerline and the two trucks’ left exterior rear-view mirrors collided with one another, police said. There were no injuries. Police verbally warned Ildebrando for making a restricted turn.

Evading Responsibility

On the night of November 8, police served a warrant against Frank Bogdanyi, 50, of Oxford, charging him with evading responsibility in connection with a motor vehicle accident on June 9.

In that accident, Bogdanyi, who was driving a pickup truck, allegedly collided with another motorist who was driving a sedan, and then sped off from the scene, police said. The accident occurred on a wet night at the southern intersection of Peck’s Lane and South Main Street.

Police released Bogdanyi on $10,000 bail for a November 21 court appearance.

Three Charges

Motorist Steven Smith, 39, of Bridgeport was driving a 1983 Mercedes-Benz sedan northward on South Main Street, near Greenbriar Lane, about 12:04 am November 9, when he lost control of the vehicle on a curve and collided with a utility pole, police said.

Smith was not injured. Police arrested him on charges of driving while under suspension, driving without automotive insurance, and failure to drive to the right on a curve.

Smith was released on a written promise to appear in court November 28.
