Ethics And Alcohol Sales
Ethics And
Alcohol Sales
To the Editor:
I have lived in Newtown for many years. I contribute to sustaining the economy of our town by purchasing goods from local merchants. By doing so our money base will widen and everyone will profit. There is a particular business that is available to citizens which is carefully monitored by state and local law to prevent minors from participating. This business would be the sale of liquor and cigarettes.
I believe in moderation and would expect that other citizens also would maintain this guide. It has come to my attention that certain businesses have been delivering liquor to residents who are over 21 years of age. This I understand to be a legal practice, and I am glad it is available to those who do not have transportation.
It has also come to my attention that liquor has been delivered on a regular basis to certain homes where there may be alcohol abuse. My question to you is how could a professional business owner knowingly deliver liquor to a person who honestly appears quite ill from the consumption? It is unethical and just wrong much less greedy. I would expect a person to be more aware of their customers who obviously have alcohol problems.
The reason why I am addressing this issue is because I expect businesses to have a higher standard of professionalism. Businesses who conduct unethical transactions should not be in our town, especially when a personâs life is in danger.
