To the Editor,

The Republican Town Committee would like to extend our congratulations to all the candidates elected yesterday to serve Newtown. While the overall results were mixed on our side, we know all the candidates on the ballot step forward to serve our community with noble intentions and we are grateful to each of them for throwing their hats in the ring. Democracy requires choice and we appreciate each person on the ballot. Thank you.

Republican voters led the way with 50.2 percent participation, something we are very proud of. Thank you to all those who voted. However, it appears we fell just short of overcoming the registration disadvantage. Both parties worked tirelessly to engage the voters; a tip of the cap to the DTC for getting the most voters to the polls.

That said, many voters, including U and minor party voters, saw fit to elect Jeff Capeci as First Selectman, and elected Republicans in other areas. We are grateful to have earned their support and proud of Jeff for running an excellent campaign. We know Jeff looks forward to working with all those elected last night, regardless of party, to lead Newtown into the future.

We must take a moment to thank our tireless volunteers for all the work they did behind the scenes. This would not have been possible without you.

Thank you as well to the families of all the candidates for the support and understanding during this busy campaign season.

Newtown is a better place because of these willing volunteers, and today we are grateful for the wonderful community we share.
