Graduating Newtown students aspiring to an agricultural-related career can benefit from an upcoming tag sale to be conducted by The Horticulture Club of Newtown on Saturday, November 14. The sale will run from 9 am to 2 pm, rain or shine, in the barn of club members Shane and George Miller, 50 Main Street. Proceeds will provide funds to support the club's scholarship fund.

“To be able to provide resources to a graduating student is very important to our club and while we are small, we work very hard at trying to contribute and provide some assistance to a student with similar interests,” club President Joan Cominski said.

Member Susan Cameron feels “this project gives our club a mission and an important one.”

Horticulture Club Scholarship committee members Jo-Ann Scebold and Jim Morley have been “very instrumental” in ensuring the selection of candidates that are seeking a degree in environmental studies, horticulture, botany, agriculture, ecology, conservation, or forestry, Ms Cominski said.

The Millers “have graciously offered the use of their fabulous barn,” where sale items include many garden-related items like plants, tools, books, pots, plant stands, etc, as well as household and small furniture items, holiday decorations and “many other useful and practical items all priced to sell,” she said.

A couple of surprise guests may also be at the tag sale this year. The Millers currently have two large turkeys frequenting the yard. Ms Cominski was at the barn this week when she saw them and they followed her as she made trips from her car to the barn. Their names, thanks to Mr Miller, are George and James.

“We have a great time at the Horticulture Club, and we all love to eat so there is always good food at our meetings,” said  Ms Cameron, adding she enjoys “learning amazing things about plants and our green world.”
