Field Hockey Team Wins, Booters Beaten In PKs, And Spikers Fall

Newtown High School’s field hockey, girls’ soccer, and girls’ volleyball team all battled in state tournament action on Monday, November 9.

The field hockey team, seeded 15th in the Class L bracket, blanked No. 18 Amity of Woodbridge 3-0 in a qualifying-round contest, under the lights at Blue & Gold Stadium. Kayla DiSibio, Alison Kelleher, and Shannon Lynch all had second-half goals. Newtown advances to visit No. 2 Conard of West Hartford in the first round, on Wednesday, November 11, beginning at 5 pm.

Prior to the field hockey contest, Blue & Gold was home to Class LL girls’ soccer first-round action. No. 20 Simsbury defeated No. 13 Newtown 3-2 (6-4 in penalty kicks). The Trojans led 2-1 late in regulation before the Nighthawks forced overtime on a goal by Maddy Sieber, assisted by Makenna Cerney, with just 2:56 left. After a pair of scoreless ten-minute OTs, the teams played a best-of-five round of penalty kicks. Both squads scored twice in the first round, forcing a second best-of-five block of PKs; Simsbury outscored Newtown 4-2 to clinch the victory.

Newtown’s volleyball team, the No. 20 seed in the Class LL field, visited No. 13 Trumbull and lost 3-1 (20-25, 25-18, 26-24, 25-16) in the first round. Jamie Calandro had a pair of aces to go along with 13 kills and a dozen digs; Tessa Leon-Gambetta had 22 digs; Molly McCoy registered 12 digs, 11 assists, and five kills; Kaityln Schneider recorded 11 digs and two aces; and Erin Burns had four kills and six blocks.
