Newtown Cobras 1, Ridgefield 1: In a game that changed from a league match to a friendly contest due to Storm Sandy, the Cobras and Ridgefield played to a tie on a brisk, teeth-chattering, afternoon. However, spirits were high on both teams whose towns were ravaged by the storm. Despite the lack of practice during the week, both squads were sharp. The Cobras took the lead in the first half on some beautiful ball movement, with Michaela Cosgriff pushing the ball forward to Elizabeth Teixeira who made a smart pass to Julia Gerace who hammered in the goal. However, Ridgefield tied the game on a goal midway through the second half. The Cobrasâ Megan Riccardi, Becca Filiato, and Cameron Powers played lock down defense keeping the box clean. Piper Salva and Elizabeth Cassetta kept pressure on Ridgefield offensively with Riley Burns and Meghan Delp moving well in the midfield. Emma Butler and Katie Stan provided the strong goaltending to preserve the win.
Net Rippers 0, Fairfield 0: With Storm Sandy slowing coming up the coast, Sunday morning was a blustery day as the Net Rippers took on the aptly named Fairfield FUSA Hurricanes for a make-up game down in Fairfield. Newtown had strong offense from Jane Shearin, Mary Sortino, and Maddie Patrick. Newtownâs goalie, Carlie, Smith was tested with several shots on goal that she confidently saved and quickly put back into play. Defense for the half was led by Jillian Carrino and Paige Farley. Olivia Buchler and Gabby Sadowski played well on offense in the second half. Morgan Seras energized the team with great balling handling. Jane Shearin valiantly saved several late game shots. Jillian Carrino again provided great defense.
Newtown Net Rippers 7, Stamford Hurricanes 0: On a cold and blustery afternoon, the Net Rippers battled more Hurricanes, these arriving inland from Stamford. Jane Shearin, Gwen Drew, and Maddie Patrick displayed fine passing and fancy footwork in leading the attacks until Carlie Smith finally broke through when she hooked a left-footed shot from the left side into the Hurricane goal. Olivia Cornett struck next with a long breakaway for the second goal. From here, the Net Ripper defense tightened with Mary Sortino, Paige Farley, and Jillian Carrino chasing down and stopping every Stamford attack, while Morgan Seras stood tall in goal. As the weather got colder in the second half, the Net Rippersâ offense heated up. Jane Shearin ripped a shot in from the corner to start the assault. Mary Sortino added the next two goals, first off a long shot and then taking a goal kick from Carlie Smith the distance and drilling it into the back of the net. A stout defensive effort led by Olivia Buchler, Charlotte Branchflower, and Sophia Bajcer enabled the offense many chances, while limiting Stamford to few shots, all of which were stoned by Carlie Smith in goal. Gabriella Sadowski knocked home a rebound and Jane Shearin added one more to complete the Net Ripper scoring.
