It Is Important To Serve

To the Editor:

On behalf of the Independent Party and myself, I want to congratulate all the candidates who were successful in Tuesday’s election. It was a very impressive list of candidates who ran for office and those who won will serve Newtown well. The campaign provided Newtown residents with many divergent opinions and a spirited and healthy debate of the issues. Much work lies ahead, but we can be confident that those elected are very capable of governing on our behalf.

Particular congratulations are in order for Pat Llodra, Will Rodgers, and Jim Gaston. The Board of Selectman is a very important arm of the government and we will have three very strong selectmen to guide Newtown.

Our best wishes go to all the candidates who ran for office whether they were successful or not. It is important to our democracy that people serve, and that takes energy and commitment. I sincerely hope that those candidates who did not secure an office will continue to be involved in Newtown politics. There are many other ways to serve and your willingness is a gift to our residents.
