School Board Is Out Of Touch

To the Editor:

Last week’s front page Bee article [“Finance Board Queries Reveal Details On $32 Million Middle School Project”] exposes our Board of Education as out of touch, irresponsible, and in disarray. How could they approve a $32 million project “without much discussion” and be clueless on a redundant $2.6 million proposed expenditure?

Education board chair Elaine McClure’s acknowledgement that it was wrong to pass the capital expenditures without full public disclosure on it specifics and that “People will make mistakes” is just plain weak and unacceptable.

Finance board chair John Kortze said, “The leadership of the school system needs to do a better job.” No kidding! Granted, Board of Education members serve in a voluntary capacity. But, they themselves sought elected positions that carry huge fiduciary responsibilities — and they don’t seem to want to play by the rules.

After this episode who can ever trust this board again?

Sincerely,

Frederick G. Roy
