Police Planning Two-Week Seatbelt Enforcement Project
Police Planning Two-Week Seatbelt Enforcement Project
Police Sergeant Douglas Wisentaner announces that town police will conduct heightened enforcement of state seatbelt laws during the period of November 12â25.
The effort is known as the âClick It or Ticketâ enforcement project.
State law requires motorists and passengers to use their seatbelts. Infraction tickets are issued to violators. Â
âWearing a seatbelt costs you nothing, and may save your life or protect you from a serious, possibly life-altering injury,â Sgt Wisentaner said in a statement.
Regular seat belt usage is the single most effective way to protect people and reduce fatalities in motor vehicle accidents, he said.
Police will be on the lookout for people not wearing seatbelts, including young drivers and vehicle passengers, he said.
Although almost nine out of ten motorists in Newtown use seatbelts, police are seeking to increase compliance with seatbelt usage laws.
The high-visibility enforcement project is sponsored by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
