Arthur B. Baxter

Arthur B. Baxter, 76, of Woodstock Meadows, Woodstock, formerly of Newtown, died November 7 at the Day Kimball Hospital, Putnam, after a long illness.

He was the husband of Patricia (Dennen) Baxter. They were married May 29, 1948, in Sommerville, Mass.

He was born in Boston, Mass., September 13, 1923, the son of the late James and Anne (Strang) Baxter. He was a veteran of World War II, serving with the US Navy from 1942 to 1946 as an aviation radioman first class in the South Pacific. He was awarded the Air Medal and Gold Star. He was a member of the American Legion in Woodstock and the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Putnam. He has made his home in Woodstock for the last 15 years; he also lived in Simsbury and Maine. A graduate of the Deerfield Academy and Harvard University, Mr Baxter worked as a realtor for several years in the Newtown area. He was an avid fisherman, and a former member of the Lions Club and the Rotary Club.

He leaves, in addition to his wife, a son, Arthur B. Baxter of Mendon, Mass; a daughter-in-law, Eileen (Dunne) Baxter; a brother, Stephen Baxter of Chapel Hill, N.C.; and a granddaughter, Elizabeth Baxter of New York, N.Y. He was pre-deceased by a son, Peter Baxter, in 1972, and a brother, James Baxter.

A graveside service will be held Saturday, November 13 at 1 pm in the Newtown Village Cemetery, Elm Street, Newtown. There are no calling hours.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to Hospice of Northeastern Connecticut, PO Box 632, Putnam, CT 06260.

The Smith & Walker Funeral Home, 148 Grove Street, Putnam, is in charge of the arrangements.
