Newtownâs sixth grade American Youth Football team won its semifinal round game, then fell to Monroe in the Colonial League championship clash. Playoff highlights are as follows:
Newtown 26, Norwalk Green 0: The Nighthawks opened the playoff season with their strongest game of the year against the higher-seeded Norwalk Green team. Due to the recent weather the game was delayed to November 3 under the lights in Norwalk.
Newtown started on the offense and a long drive down the field was capped by a Ryan Kost two-yard touchdown run. The defense then took the field and forced a three and out. Late in the second half the offense mounted a drive that included runs by Simon Preston and C.J. Shambelan. The drive ended on a screen pass from Ryan Kost to Mark hall. Thanks to downfield blocking from Alex Street and Doug Carriero Mark was able to find his way to the end zone.
The second half started with the ball in the hands of the Norwalk offense. Pressure on the Norwalk quarterback by Newtown defensive end Connor Marlin led to an interception by Kyle Roche. Ryan Kost rewarded Roche with a long pass over the middle for a touchdown. Newtown capped its great performance with another touchdown pass. This time Kost hooked up with David Daria for the final score of the game. After the win the boys were left with two days to prepare for a game against last yearâs champions, the Monroe Lions.
Monroe 40, Newtown 14: The Nighthawks came out strong against the defending champs, holding the Monroe offense to a pair of three and outs before yielding a touchdown.
