*I have two things to mention in relation to radio station WPKN (89.5 FM) this week. This first is the First Annual (an oxymoron, I know) WPKN Record Fair. On Sunday, November 12, from 9 am to 4:30 pm, this event will be ongoing at Milford Knights of Columbus Hall, at 625 Bridgeport Avenue in Milford. Admission is $5 at the door; if you want to take advantage of early bird shopping, you can get in at 8 am for $15.
Considering WPKN broadcasts virtually every musical style during its broadcast day, I would imagine you would be able to find offerings in as wide a variety as well â folk, blues, jazz and reggae to bluegrass, country and world music. In addition to the array of music to purchase, there will also be food, WPKN programmers playing music and live musical guests.
For information contact the station directly at 203/331-1309 or visit the web site www.wpkn.org (yes, .org; WPKN is a non-profit, completely listener-supported radio station, which is one of the reasons the record fair is being held this weekend â proceeds will benefit the Bridgeport-based station) and follow the link to the record fair.
*The second WPKN-related thing I wanted to mention this week is a benefit performance that will be at The Acoustic Café in Bridgeport this weekend. LUCINDA will be at the venue, performing her self-described âfolk with an edgeâ songs from her indie debut CD The Sky Is Falling along with new work from her sophomore effort, The Ghost in the Room, released this past June. Lucinda, at right, has been pretty busy lately. Since her appearance in September at the National Academy of Popular Music and The Songwriterâs Hall of Fame ceremonies in New York City, the Newtown native and current Bethel resident has also begun touring the Borders Books*Music*Café chain throughout the Northeast along with regular appearances in regional coffeeshops.
The Acoustic Café show will be Saturday, November 11, and showtime is 9 pm. The café is at 2926 Fairfield Avenue. The club has been selecting one of its concerts each month and sending part of the proceeds from door directly to the radio station. I_donât know what the cover charge for Saturday night will be, but the club can be contacted at 203/335-FOLK (3655). THE TWO SIBERIANS will also be playing Saturday night.
*Tuxedo Junction will be opening at 9 pm on Thanksgiving Thursday this year. The club wonât have live music on stage that night, but there will be a DJ spinning music for anyone who wants to dance off all that turkey, stuffing and cranberry sauce. Live music will return the following night with THE ZOO.
*Finally this week, THE BACON BROTHERS â yes, including that Bacon brother, Kevin â will be opening Yale Repertory Theatreâs 2000-01 Special Events Series this season with two concerts in December. The duo of Kevin and Michael Bacon, backed by a four-piece band, will perform work from their latest recording, Getting There. The new album features 13 original songs by the brothers and is the follow-up to their first release, Forosoco. The duo performs a blend of folk, rock, soul and country.
The Bacon Brothers will be performing in New Haven on Friday and Saturday, December 8 and 9. Showtime is 8 pm both evenings. Tickets are available at $25 for students, $30 for preferred seating and $35 for premium seating. The show will be at the Yale Rep Theatre, at 1120 Chapel Street in the arts and entertainment district of New Haven. For reservations or additional information contact the theatreâs box office, 203/432-1234.
Until next week, Iâll be seeing you... on the road.
