Newtown High School's girls' soccer team earned a trip to the Class LL state tournament quarterfinals.
The eighth-seeded Nighthawks blanked No. 9 and visiting Amity of Woodbridge 1-0 at Blue & Gold Stadium, on November 7. A first-half cross by Sydney Howard went into the net off an Amity player, and NHS goalkeeper Julianna Stavola and the defense made the lead stand up.
This was a rematch of Newtown's season opener, won 2-0 by the Hawks, also at Blue & Gold.
With the state playoff triumph, Newtown will visit top-seeded Glastonbury on Friday, November 9. The game is set for 2 pm (subject to change; check back for possible updates).
