Jazz Singer Carol Leigh

To Perform At Library

TRUMBULL — Carol Leigh, who performs glamorous performances in the style of a jazz singer from the 20s, 30s and 40s, will sing in the new “Uptown Community Cabaret” – the community room of Trumbull Public Library – on Sunday, November 16, at 2 pm.

Ms Leigh recently returned from an engagement in Chicago with the Original Salty Dogs, a group playing the music of King Oliver, Jellyroll Morton and other top jazz artists.

Ms Leigh began her professional singing career in San Francisco, working with Pops Foster (who played bass with Louis Armstrong), Wellman Braud (who played bass with Duke Ellington), and Slim Gaillard (the pianist and vocalist).

She worked an after hours club where jazz greats came and sat in. She met the Salty Dogs in Chicago during the early 1970s, and continues to work with them. She has sung and recorded around the world, including at major festivals.

Wearing one of the gowns from her collection of dresses fashionable at the height of the jazz era, Ms Leigh intersperses her songs with charming anecdotes about musicians like Fats Waller and Ma Rainey. Her songs are popular standards of traditional jazz, swing, blues and gospel styles.

The community room at Trumbull Library will be transformed for the afternoon into a European-style cabaret.  Suggested donation is $10 per person, and reservations are required.

The library is at 33 Quality Street, one block off Main Street; call 452-5197.
