Discovery Series Looks At Diabetes Nov. 13
FARMINGTON â Approximately 17 million people in the United States, or 6.2 percent of the population, have diabetes which is why the disease is the topic of a Discovery Series lecture, Thursday, November 13, at the University of Connecticut Health Center.
The free seminar, intended for the general public, will be held from 7 to 9 pm in the Keller Auditorium, 263 Farmington Avenue.
Prior to the program, Douglas Albreski, director of podiatric dermatology at the health center, will offer free foot screenings from 5 to 6:30. The brief screenings will detect if individuals have dry skin. Not everyone with dry skin has diabetes, but approximately 85 percent of people with diabetes are affected by dry skin.
These special screenings will be brief, lasting just a few minutes, and will be linked with Dr Albreskiâs presentation during the program.
Lecturers include Dr Albreski and Kevin Vowles, doctoral candidate, Department of Behavioral Sciences. The seminar will be moderated by Carole Mensing, coordinator of the health centerâs diabetes education programs and president, health care and education, American Diabetes Association.
Registration is required for the Discovery Series program and an appointment is necessary for the screening. Call toll-free 800-535-6232 to make both reservation and appointment.
