The Newtown Torpedoes – last year’s Yankee League Division B winners – showed a lot of promise (and demonstrated good sportsmanship) as they fielded a mixed team of veteran and new swimmers in the first meet of the winter season against a strong side representing Watertown.

In the final count, the seniority and experience of Watertown was enough for the visitors to claim a 339-235 victory. But many excellent first-time performances clearly demonstrated that the Torpedoes will be back with a vengeance in the weeks to come as coaches Atkinson, Hubbard and Maher develop the potential of their enthusiastic young squad.

Double winners giving strong individual performances included Mike Hubbard (8 and under boys – 100 IM, 50 breast), Stefan Toi (9 and 10 boys – 100 IM, 50 breast), Jay Shunter (13 and 14 boys – 100 free, 100 fly), Samantha O’Donnell (11 and 12 girls – 100 free, 200 free), Abby Atkinson (11 and 12 girls – 50 back, 50 breast) and Amy Robinson (13 and 14 girls – 50 free, 200 free).
