Orienteering Meet

At Osborndale Park

DERBY — Western Connecticut Orienteering Club will hold an orienteering meet on Saturday, November 18, at Osbornedale State Park. Nancy Koehler of Groton, Mass., will design the courses for this event. Ms Koehler is the US Orienteering Federation vice president for competition.

Participants will use an orienteering map and a compass to find their way across the terrain seeking orange and white flags at various land features. The features are marked on the map and act as checkpoints along the course. The participants decide on the route to the feature and punch a score card to confirm finding the flag. In orienteering as a competition, the winner punches all the flags in the shortest time. At Osbornedale, all standard courses from Beginner to Expert will be available. Instruction and training will be available for beginners.
