State Tourney Brackets Set For Nighthawks
Newtown High School’s postseason continues with soccer, field hockey, and volleyball state tournament action, getting underway on Monday, November 9. Brackets were released by the Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Conference, on the morning of November 6, and complete information is available on the ciac tournament webpage. The NHS girls’ and boys’ soccer teams earned first-round home games, the field hockey team will have home field advantage for a qualifying-round contest, and the girls’ volleyball team will be on the road to begin the state playoffs.
Coming off South-West Conference tournament semifinal-round exits, both soccer teams will tangle with squads from Simsbury. The girls, seeded 13th in the Class LL bracket, host No. 20 Simsbury on Monday, beginning at 2 pm. The winner visits fourth-seeded Shelton in the quarterfinals, on Wednesday, November 11. Looking ahead, if the Nighthawks advance through the first two rounds, it could set up a quarterfinal clash with SWC rival New Milford, which knocked the Hawks out of the conference tourney in double overtime.
The boys’ booters, having earned the ninth seed in the Class LL, will host No. 24 Simsbury on Tuesday, November 10, beginning at 2 pm. The winner faces either No. 8 Cheshire or No. 25 Trumbull in the second round on Thursday, November 12.
Newtown’s field hockey team earned the Class L’s 15th seed and is slated to host No. 18 Amity of Woodbridge on Monday, November 9, starting at 4:30 pm. The winner visits second-seeded Conard of West Hartford on Wednesday.
On the volleyball court, the No. 20 Nighthawks will visit No. 13 Trumbull in the first round of Class LL action on Monday, November 9; the match starts at 6 pm. The winner earns a trip to fourth-seeded Cheshire on Thursday for a second round match.
The state swimming and diving championships will take place in mid-November. Newtown will compete in the SWC championships on at Masuk High in Monroe on Saturday, November 7, beginning at 4 pm (the diving finals took place on Wednesday, November 4).
Cross country state class championships were held, and the state open is set for Friday, November 6. And the football regular season continues; state playoffs begin on December 1.
