Occupation: I am a computer teacher at Rockwell K-3 School in Bethel. I get to teach the fun stuff — computer programming, robots — all the stuff kids enjoy.
Family: My husband, Ryan, is a teacher in New Fairfield. He teaches elementary math. Our daughter, Riley, is 7 years old and in the second grade at Hawley School. Our son is Jake, and he is 3 years old, and at St Rose Preschool.
Pets: My pet is my parents’ dog, Brady, and they live just across the street from us. It’s the best way to have a pet!
How long have you lived in Newtown? We’ve lived here for about ten years.
What do you like to do in your free time? Free time? What’s that? Between the kids, a big family, and lots of friends, there’s not much free time. We do like to travel all summer. We take random road trips, like one to New Jersey via Chicago. We camp with the kids and get away from reality. I do photography as a side job, doing family pictures and weddings. I love it. My photography business is Oragano Photography. A lot of my free time is now going toward the Newtown Education Foundation, which I’m co-founding. We’re trying to focus on bringing new creative and innovative support to students and teachers of Newtown. It came out of the Save Our Schools at Hawley, and we’re trying to get positive support for our schools.
What music are you listening to these days? The One Direction concert at Jet Stadium, this summer, was the highlight. I took our daughter and her friends and the moms. It was just the girls.
Do you have a favorite vacation destination? Martha’s Vineyard is by far my favorite. I love the little gingerbread cottages and being on an island, away from everything. That’s my happy place.
What is the best thing about Newtown? I love my neighborhood. It’s the best thing about Newtown. It’s such a fun neighborhood. We make a neighborhood luge every winter for sliding, and Fridays at the bus stop are happy hour. Being in town, we have the tree lighting, Halloween, the parade, all right here. Our neighborhood always feels like it’s a party.
Who has been the greatest influence in your life? My parents, Gail and Tony. Both have showed how important people are, anyone you meet. My mom almost always has a “Life Is Good” T-shirt to wear. It’s her motto. My dad reminds me about “Deeds, not words.” Having two teachers as parents, and living in the neighborhood with us, they show us the importance of love. They’ve become the neighborhood “grandparents.”
If you could meet someone from the past, who would you choose? I would say my grandfather. I never met him. He passed away a few months after I was born. Everyone says he was the life of the party, always had a smile on, and always made everyone welcome in his home.
Do you have a guilty pleasure? Indulging in fun. I’m always up for an adventure, never say no to having people over, or going out with friends, or taking road trips. Or jumping in a fountain… or trying something new.
