NHS Cross Country Teams Compete In State Championships
The Newtown High School girlsâ and boysâ cross country teams raced in the Class LL State Championships at Wickham Park in Manchester on Halloween.
The girls placed fourth among 20 teams and the boys were 13th, also in a field of 20 schools. The girlsâ race was won by Norwich Free Academy with a score of 94 and NHS scored 155 points. The boysâ race was won by Xavier (64) and Newtown had a total of 326.
In the girlsâ race, Newtownâs runners crossed the finish line in order as follows: Anne Martino (11th overall in a time of 20:40), Katie Burns (12th overall, 20:47), Erin Begg (17th overall, 21:01) cracked the top 20 among 127 finishers. Mara Scallon, Danni Villa, Lilly Rodriquez and Scarlett OâSullivan rounded out Newtownâs finishers. In the boysâ race, completed by 143 runners, Jake Feinstein (37th in 18:04), Patrick Sullivan (38th in 18:05) and Palmer Lintz (76th in 18:41) were Newtownâs first three to finish and were followed by teammates Dieter Gutbrod, Austin Baldour, Erik Hoffman and Matt Bobkowski.
