Congratulations To The Winners

To the Editor:

I offer sincere congratulations to all the winners in yesterday’s elections, and in particular to my opponents in the Board of Finance race. Your volunteer service is in many ways a thankless task, and I respect your willingness to continue that commitment. The town has benefited from the board’s efforts over the past nine years, as you have grappled with the difficult challenge of balancing fiscal restraint while meeting the needs of our citizens. I had hoped for an opportunity to assist in addressing that challenge, but I don’t envy you the job.

I would also like to congratulate the town Republicans, and Pat Llodra in particular, for their strong showing. While IPN gained ground, it is the GOP that was selected to lead the town. I wish you all the best in that endeavor and am confident that you will find much support from IPN, particularly as you seek to follow through on your commitments to implement long-range planning, increase transparency and communications, and conduct a full of review of Fairfield Hills with extensive public input.

One very disappointing note in the results yesterday was Po Murray’s loss by just 21 votes in the District 2 Legislative Council race. Po has been a tireless advocate for our town, showing truly remarkable fortitude in the face of unwarranted criticism of her actions and a concerted effort to marginalize and dismiss her views. If anyone deserved to be elected this year, it was Po. The town is far poorer without her informed, passionate voice on the council.

Thanks to all who came out to vote yesterday, and especially to those who honored me with their votes, letters of endorsement, and other support. Special thanks to my wife, Kim, whose strong support came despite her discomfort over my being in the public eye during what was sometimes a contentious campaign.

Finally, I want to thank The Bee for its generous coverage of the election and especially for making so much space available in the Letter Hive. This is a true service to our community.

Benjamin Roberts

IPN Candidate for Board of Finance
