The Newtown Torpedoes opened the 2001-02 age group swimming season with a convincing 496-274 win over a large team from West Haven.

Swimmers of all ages chattered excitedly on the pool deck as they waited for the meet to commence and it was clear that all participants were looking forward to the new season. With a scoring change in effect for team relays, the Torpedoes dominated 13 out of the 16 events – and several B teams placed second to pick up additional points.

While the team’s veteran swimmers appeared virtually unstoppable in almost every age group, newcomers also surprised the coaching staff with outstanding performances.

“We tried to field swimmers in all events anticipating keen competition from West Haven,” commented coach Mary Atkinson. “We never expected a result like this, however. The team did a great job.”

Outstanding individual performances and double winners included: Maggie Hoolehan, Lucy Remitz, Emma Atkinson, Maggie Hemingway, Abby Atkinson, Liz Gugino for the girls and Mason West, Andrew Golanciwicz, Anthony Fiore, Stefan Toi, and Zack Moliver for the boys.

The Torpedoes will swim at New Milford on Saturday, November 17.
