Counseling Center Gets Grant From Sept. 11th Fund

The Family Counseling Center, Inc, has been awarded a grant by the September 11th Fund established by the United Way and the New York Community Trust to help the community respond to the immediate needs of the victims, their families, front-line workers, social service providers and communities affected by the events of September 11. The program developed by the center’s clinical staff is a two-pronged program: the first provides crisis intervention for up to 25 families and the second provides debriefing sessions to front-line workers (i.e. teachers, clergy, emergency personnel, social service and mental health workers).

According to Terry Blackmer, LCSW, executive director, “Everyone in our nation has been impacted either directly or indirectly by the events of September 11, and this grant allows the center to respond to the immediate needs of members our community.”

Individuals and families who need help with the aftermath of trauma can call the center at 426-8103 to obtain confidential crisis intervention services. Mrs Blackmer, who has extensive experience and training in dealing with trauma, feels that front-line workers are especially vulnerable and that was the reason a special debriefing group was designed.

These workers are constantly listening to people’s stories about the events of September 11 and the impact on their clients lives as well as dealing with their own feelings and fears. They need to recognize that self-care is essential so that they can continue to be ready to help their clients. This is true for mental health professionals, clergy, medical and emergency workers as well as those who work in probate and welfare offices, Red Cross and Salvation Army.

Some of the signs that people might experience that would indicate they are having trouble include nightmares, apathy, missing work, lack of concentration, and social withdrawal and increased sensitivity to violence.

The debriefing groups will be held at noon or 3:30 pm at United Way offices at 85 West Street in the Conference Room in Danbury. The first session was held October 29 with other sessions set for November 12 and 26, and December 10. Space is limited; to register call the center at 426-8103. There is no cost.
