MILFORD â The youthful Newtown High School swim team â under new coach Mary Atkinson â showed some spark and a lot of promise, but the 2001 South-West Conference season ended on a bit of a downer with a 10th-place finish at the league championships on Saturday at Foran High School in Milford.
Lauralton Hall cruised to the first-place title with 490.5 points and Pomperaug was a distant second with 370.5 points. Masuk (233.5), Joel Barlow (212), Bunnell (208), Brookfield (162), New Fairfield (140), Weston (122) and New Milford (111) all followed.
The âHawks scored 80 points and didnât enjoy any top six finishes.
The âHawks were 10th in the 200 medley relay (2:12.27), 10th in the 200 freestyle relay (1:59.16) and ninth in the 400 freestyle relay (4:17.69).

Newtown finished 5-8 during the dual meet season, losing its final three meets, but qualified 15 athletes for the SWC meet.
This weekend, five athletes will be moving on to the CIAC state championship meet. Ashey (200 IM and 500 free), RUshefski (200 and 500 free), Randall (100 breast), Mayers (diving) and Robinson (100 back) have all qualified for individual events.
