NEWINGTON â No one could blame the Newtown Rockets for being a little bit unsettled in the early moments of their CJSA Girls U13 State Cup championship soccer game against Farmington last weekend.
After all, not only were they nervous for being in the big game, but their starting goalie, Tara Gaston, had to be taken to the hospital with a serious cut above her eye, sustained while stopping Farmingtonâs first shot on goal.
Somehow, that seemed to settle the Rockets right down.
Vicky Thomas took over in goal, Siobhan Cooper scored on a cross by Mary Anders almost immediately after the injury time out, and the Rockets rallied together to defeat Farmington, 3-0, to capture the CJSA State Cup title.
Mary Anders put the Rockets ahead, 2-0, after breaking through the Farmington defense with a terrific pass from Alex Konneker. Cooper came back in the second half with her second goal after a persistent offensive attack.
The Newtown defense, powered by Elyssa Samsel, Megan Rawson and Emily Fields. fought hard. Vicky Thomas had an awesome save to reinforce the teamâs confidence and momentum. Kayla Mesko played supported the offense and the midfield of Maria Cinquegrana, Erin Clark and Casey Frobey played well.
Caitlin Hansen, Mary G. Ober and Jillian Tanner stabilized the constant pressure on Farmington.
The Newtown Rockets are coached by David Frobey, and trained by David Cooper.
