Football Team Topples New Fairfield Rebels And New Milford Green Wave
There certainly has not been any shortage of offense for Newtown High School’s football team in 7-on-7 one-hand touch action this fall. The Nighthawks made it five wins in as many games this past week with a 49-12 triumph over New Fairfield in a makeup game, Senior Night, on October 28, and a 47-22 win over New Milford two nights later; both pigskin battles were at Blue & Gold Stadium.
Newtown jumped out to the quick lead by winning the first linemen strong competition of the night, before game play against New Fairfield, seizing a 3-0 lead. After a defensive stand, the Nighthawks took over on downs and cashed in when quarterback Jack Street connected with C.J. Cuomo on a 41 yard touchdown play. Eric Gray had an interception to help the Hawks preserve the shutout through one quarter of play. It was 10-0 after the first and 13-0 heading to the second following another strongman competition victory.
After a clutch third down completion to Connor Breslin, Street connected with Shaine Luzietti on a 35 yard TD bomb and another Rich Guman extra point pushed the lead to 20-0. The Rebels got on the scoreboard late in the second quarter, but Newtown answered when Street hit Gray on a 32 yard scoring play. Gray made a leaping grab and used some quick footwork to elude a defender attempting to touch him down a few yards short of the end zone. NHS led 27-6 at the half and carried a 36-12 lead into the fourth quarter following three more strongman event wins, two of which were during halftime.
Chase Demers made an athletic interception late in the third quarter. Cuomo caught another TD pass from Street, and Breslin added a 50 yard interception for a score in the fourth. Breslin had a great night on both sides of the ball, Newtown Coach Bobby Pattison noted.
“New Fairfield was very athletic and I was happy with our defensive and offensive play. Our kids played smart, disciplined football. And our lineman have done a great job for us winning competition after competition,” Pattison said.
In the win over the New Milford Green Wave, Street threw TD passes to Cuomo, Colin Breslin, Connor Breslin, Gray, and Matt Williams. Brandon O’Neill came up with an interception off of a tip by Demers setting up Newtown’s final score of the night.
The lineman won four of the five strongman competitions. Senior linemen who have dominated as much in their competitions as the Hawks have in game play are Grant Baker, Grayson DeFelice, Sam Smith, Zack Smith. Austin Cameron, Lyle Petrellese, Nick Sabillon, Rich Bomely, and Jordan Conrad. The competitions include tug of war; a timed tractor tire flip event in which players take turns moving a huge tire, one flip at a time, the length of the field; and sled push.
Newtown wraps up the shortened season with a visit to Bunnell of Stratford on Friday, November 6; game starts at 6 pm.
