Pretty Tough Powder Puffs

The Powder Puffs won Newtown’s Babe Ruth Fall 10/11-year-old championship this past week. In a grueling, seven-inning, see saw affair, the Powder Puffs outlasted a tough and determined Tsunami team 17-10.

With the score tied 2-2 after two innings of play, both teams erupted for multiple run innings and the Tsunami squad led 9-8 after five. During the top half of the sixth, the Powder Puffs took the lead by scoring two runs as Wesley Scriven and Eugene Citrano crossed home plate. The Tsunami team tied the score in the bottom half of the inning to force extras on a single and run scored by Matt Kretz.  With the score tied at 10 after six, the Powder Puff team erupted for seven runs, led by hits from Tommy Stanczyk, Daniel Grosso, Greg Brissette, Lucas O’Brien, Eugene Citrano, and Grant Untiedt. Matt Kugler came in to pitch the seventh inning and held back Tsunami in the final frame.

Justin Hull scored three runs and both Vijay Makayee and Ryan Beechey played well defensively.  Jeff Hess, Brissette, O’Brien, and Kugler all pitched extremely well in the effort.

Leading the Tsunami offense were Matthew Kretz, collecting three hits, and Kenny Malin and Dylan Tyrrell, with two hits apiece. Tyrrell hit a two-run home run. Defensively, Maxwell Goldstein, at second base, made three putouts, and Jason Hebner and Spencer Johnson each pitched three strong innings, allowing two runs apiece.
