NHS Runners Race In State Championships

Newtown High School’s girls’ and boys’ cross country teams competed in the Class LL State Championships at Wickham Park in Manchester on October 30. The girls were ninth among 17 LL schools, and the boys placed fifth among 21 schools.

The NHS boys, which had gone undefeated during the regular season, had 179 points. Amity won the meet with 96. The Newtown girls had 221. Glastonbury won the meet with 68.

Newtown’s boys’ team was led by Jake Feinstein, who placed 12th among 148 race finishers in a time of 16:44. Pat Sullivan was 25th in 17:10, Dieter Gutbrod placed 39th in 17:26, David Klein was 43rd in 17:37, and Austin Baldor came in 60th in 17:46.

In the girls’ race, Newtown was paced by Anne Martino, who came in ninth among 121 runners, crossing the finish line in 19:57. Mara Scallon was 35th in 21:03, Emily Floros and Dani Villa were 60th and 61st, respectively, in 21:51 and 21:52, Jenny van Veen was 64th in a time of 21:55. Katie Burns placed 80th in 22:16, and Erin Begg came in 89th in a time of 22:38.
