Local Voters Back Several Winners In State, National Races

In the state’s top race Newtown strongly favored the GOP team of Tom Foley and Danbury Mayor Mark Boughton for lieutenant governor. The Foley/Boughton ticket received 6,584 votes locally.

Locally, Democratic gubernatorial contender Dan Malloy and his running mate, State Comptroller Nancy Wyman received 4,287 votes. The Malloy/Wyman team is also endorsed on the Connecticut Working Families Party line on the local ballot.

The Independent Party candidate Thomas Marsh and Cicero Booker, Jr, his lieutenant governor running mate received 132 votes.

On Wednesday, Secretary of the State Susan Bysiewicz called the close race, declaring Mr Malloy the winner with a 3,103-vote margin

US Senate

Democrat and current state Attorney General Richard Blumenthal received 5,065 votes locally in the race for the US Senate seat being vacated by Chris Dodd. But Newtowners came out strong for Republican US Senate challenger Linda McMahon, casting 5,890 in her favor.

Mr Blumenthal, who captured the Senate post with 54 percent of the overall vote to Ms McMahon’s 44 percent, was cross endorsed on the Working Families line.

Dr John Mertens, the US Senate candidate for the Connecticut for Lieberman Party received 40 votes locally, while Warren Mosler the State Independent US Senate candidate picked up 98 votes here in Newtown.

5th District

Republican Sam Caligiuri could not match the popularity of incumbent Democrat Chris Murphy in the 5th US Congressional District. Mr Caligiuri, who was also cross endorsed by state Independents, received 5,355 votes to Rep Murphy’s 5,612 votes locally.

Congressman Murphy, whose district-wide total was 108,193 to Mr Caligiuri’s 91,817 votes, was cross endorsed by the Working Families Party.

State Senate

Incumbent Republican State Senator John McKinney received 7,261 votes locally, while his Democratic challenger Mitchell Fuchs picked up 3,349 votes in Newtown. Across the 28th Senate District, Sen McKinney garnished 25,437 votes to Mr Fuchs’ 12,105.

SOTS

Current Consumer Protection Commissioner Jerry Farrell, Jr, a Republican, received 5,724 in his race against Denise Merrill for Secretary of the State. Ms Merrill, who was cross endorsed by the Working Families Party received 4,544 local votes.

She was ultimately successful, however, receiving 513,285 votes statewide to Mr Farrell’s 440,780.

Votes for under party secretary of the state candidates on the local ballot were as follows: Green Party challenger S. Michael DeRosa, 113; Independent Michael Telesca, 186; and Libertarian Ken Mosher, 93.

State Treasurer

For state treasurer, GOP candidate Jeff Wright picked up 5,798 votes in Newtown versus 3,041 for incumbent Democrat Denise Nappier, who was cross endorsed by the Working Families Party. Ms Napier was the victor in statewide voting, however, capturing 527,550 votes to Mr Wright’s 435,694.

David Bue, the Green candidate for state treasurer received 88 votes locally, while Andrew Grant White, the endorsed Independent picked up 190 votes.

Comptroller

The open seat for state comptroller was sought by Republican Jack Orchulli, who received 5,741 votes in Newtown to Democrat Kevin Lembo, who picked up 4,226. Mr Lembo prevailed in his race statewide, however, with 509,977 votes to Mr Orchulli’s 416,225.

Locally, Colin Bennett of the Green Party received 102 votes; Libertarian Joshua Katz picked up 110 votes; and Independent Hugh Dolan received 235 votes.

Mr Lembo was cross endorsed by the Working Families Party.

Attorney General

Republican Martha Dean challenged Democrat George Jepson for the open attorney general seat, along with Stephen Fournier of the Green Party. Mr Jepson, who was cross endorsed by the Working Families Party received 4,470 votes to Ms Dean’s 5,929 votes.

At the statewide level, Mr Jepson carried the day with 520,764 votes to Ms Dean’s 437,728.

Mr Fournier was also a candidate on the Independent ballot line, and he received a total of 172 votes in Newtown.
